The first Victorian Derby was run in 1855, and Rose of May was the original Victoria Derby champion. Memorable champions of the race include Fireworks, who won the race twice in the 1860s, and Star of the Realm who set the speed record at the current 2500m distance of the race.

The Victorian Derby race is run over 2500 metres and is considered a feature race for Group One three-year-olds. Victorian Derby Day is the only race day on Australian race courses where every race has Group status.

Although the Melbourne Cup is considered to be the most popular racing event in Australia that inspires a heap of Melbourne Cup tips and widespread betting, Victorian Derby Day attracts more race-goers and holds the record for the highest attendance at a Spring Racing Carnival meeting with an official attendance of over 129,000 in 2007. It also rivals the big race in terms of punters, with plenty of money put down on the result of the Victorian Derby at sites like Ladbrokes.com.au.
